  • 8964. Never Forget.

8964. never forget. it was the day the communist regime of china attacked unarmed students and civilians in their non-violent protests against the government's corruption and lack of democracy. the estimated death toll was in the thousands with many more injured. today, twenty years later, several of students leaders during the protest are still under house arrest. many of the leaders fled the country and could never return. family members of the murdered students are still forbidden to discuss with the media. school textbooks still make no reference to the massacre.

i was five years old and i witnessed the massacre on the news. i remember my mother was crying and praying for the safety of the students. my mom held me tightly and told me to never forget this day. she told me to make sure my own children never forget this day. the students were so young and so hopeful. they never wanted to revolt against the government itself. all they ever wanted was to have some say, to have some liberty, to end corruption in the governemnt. their requests could've been ignored. there was absolutely no need to use any violence on unarmed civilians.

it was this incident that prompted my parents to send me to america for a better education.

150,000 strong in hong kong gathering for a candle vigil in victoria park in hong kong. being the only place in china where there is still any freedom to protest and freedom of speech, we're the only ones left who can make a statement without fearing for our lives; so we will:

our demands for the communist government are simple and realistic. to release the imprisoned student leaders, to form an independent commission to investigate the incident, to create some progress towards democracy and to admit fault where appropriate.

the more you try to shut us up, the more you try to deny the truth, the louder we speak with our actions.

  • hong kong sex education

my parents and i were having lunch and watching tv together. nothing good is ever on in the afternoon so we ended up watching etv (educational tv) for teenagers. unfortunately for us, it was sex ed. and my mother, being the crazier one of the three of us, insisted that we watched it.

they did a little skit about a 15-year-old girl finding out she was pregnant after the boyfriend broke up with her. and in a classroom setting, the students were asked what she should do. the students were quite ignorant, and that was understandable. that's why we need a sex ed program. but the only objective of the program was to promote abstinence through fear.

and i'm not just talking about fear of pregnancy or fear of missing out opportunities to good education. those are legitimate fears that are acceptable and realistic.

i was shocked and irritated when during one part of the skits, the social worker talked to the pregnant girl about abortion and how her future husband would probably dislike her for that.

    what the fuck?

    ...

    what the fuck?

and all this time, i couldn't figure out why women here have such low self-esteem! there it was, spoon feeding them fucked up logic through etv!

to make matters worse, they had a discussion on preventive measures without any mention of any contraceptives other than "don't have sex until you are married!". really? we hear cases everyday about teenagers as young as twelve years old getting pregnant, having group sex and giving birth without even realizing that they were pregnant. and we don't even tell them about condoms and morning after pills.

it may have something to do with the conservative culture, but if we can broadcast celebrities having sex on camera and have large spreads about brothels and prostitutes on newspapers and magazines, the least we could do is distribute some condoms. you can't fall behind reality by so much.

oh and stop sabotaging young girls' self-esteem by pushing grown men's insecurity issues onto them. the writer for this program should be ashamed of himself.

  • questions to which i have no answers

questions to which i have no answers:

    1. do things happen completely by chance or do the minor seemingly irrelevant objects like fengshui play a role? they say fengshui is just statistics for thousands of years, and nassim taleb says it's all just random. i'm secretary hoping fengshui will work because otherwise i'm left with no options.

    2. since nearly everyone ends up hating his/her spouse, should people still marry for love/the illusion of love? can we skip the whole process? what would an alternative system be?

    3. for the geeks, has anyone figured out our fitness function for our evolutionary algorithm yet? why is that people with minimal resources are having many children while the loving, responsible parents are sterile? why is that the underdeveloped world infested with aids have such a high pregnancy rate while developed countries are facing an aging of population crisis?

    4. i would like to make it impossible for un-loving, un-responsible and un-intelligent people to reproduce. i'm not saying to eliminate them altogether, but i'm saying, keep our gene pool clean. why is that immoral? i don't see any articles protecting the right to give birth in the european convention on human rights.

    5. is there really a big conspiracy behind capitalism and mankind? or are we just naturally inclined to self-destroy?

    6. why do humans never listen to great historical figures like gandhi, buddha or jesus? they laid down the correct path and great maxims for humans and yet true followers are so rare.

and lastly, why do i always procrastinate before my final exams?

  • what i think life is about...

you know how when you complete a very difficult task which you have obsessed over for months or even years, and you feel the tears building up in your eyes. and you can't believe how you have finally made it.

yes. that's what i want. i don't think life should be lived any other way.

and yes, goal oriented. and pushing myself to become obsessive with completion.
